Advice to government, assessment for national and international funders, and leadership in sector bodies
His external service falls into two groups with different kinds of authority. The first is advisory and evaluative: membership of the Artificial Intelligence Reference Group at the Office of the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, and assessment of proposals for MBIE, Royal Society Te Apārangi and European funders, where his judgement bears on the allocation of public research money. The second is representative: seats on the bodies that set expectations for BIM practice and education, architectural science and the accreditation of built environment programmes in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australasia. In BIMinNZ he holds the one advisory seat its terms of reference reserve for academia.

Sole academic advisor to the national committee that leads BIM adoption across the New Zealand construction sector. The BIMinNZ terms of reference provide for one advisor from academia, to connect the committee with universities, end users and local and central government agencies.
